Liza notices something is off with her brother Patrick. His spark is missing. Their parents don't notice, but thanks to stories their old babysitter had told the kids, Liza knows right away what has happened - the Spindlers have captured Patrick's soul. Liza knows that if she doesn't get it back quickly her brother will be lost forever so she gathers up all of her courage and heads down Below to take on the Spindlers alone.
Once there she stumbles upon a giant rat who becomes her Below guide and they set out on an adventure to find the Spindlers and hopefully take back Patrick's soul.
So, the good - it's a fast read. It's imaginitive and fun. It's a complete story (this feels rare lately). Good for all ages.
The bad - You know that third act battle scene that every movie has? The one you're probably tired of by now? The one that doesn't quite work and is there because it's some kind of law. The rushed, here's the confrontation you were waiting for, let's get it over with scene? You know how a lot of books have that too? Yeah, It's here. Also it was really tough to care about some of the characters you were supposed to care about as they just weren't developed enough.
Overall a decent fast fun read, but could be better.
