Oppen is a slow absorber, his words. When his father dies and Oppen makes a mistake (burying his father on his own property) a decision is made - Oppen should go live with aunt in Panorama City. While this wasn't Oppen's idea, he goes along with it as he's eager to become a man of the world. Surely this move is a good step in that direction. His time in Panorama city is recounted via Oppen into a tape recorder on his "death bed". He wants to let his future son know all about his father as he's sure he won't be around to see his birth.
Right from the start it's clear that Oppen is unique. He'd describe his bullies as his friends and their bullying as games. That's not to say that Oppen doesn't stand up for himself, he does, just in his own ways. Ways that usually end up with people worrying about him when he does things like not show up for work or lands himself on said "death bed". He makes friends with a con man.
A charming story that bounces from situation to situation, sometimes those situations seems to go nowhere and sometimes they seem to go to unbelievable places. Sometimes dull and sometimes lovely. In the end the "village idiot" with the binoculars and the bike leaves his mark.
